Overseas Rent Allowance

What’s it for?

Sometimes you may need to hire private accommodation when serving overseas because no suitable public accommodation is available. Overseas Rent Allowance was created to help you cover the cost of rent in this situation.  If you are billed for items such as water and/or sewerage that are normally reflected in your accommodation charges, reasonable claims for reimbursement against receipted bills may also be approved.

What do I get?

You’ll receive Overseas Rent Allowance as a monthly payment with your salary. You can use the allowance to cover the cost of rent and utilities.

When can’t I use this?

You won’t be able to claim this benefit if you are in Service provided accommodation or if the property is owned by you, your spouse, civil partner or dependent child, or by a non-public company in which you, your spouse, civil partner or dependent child have a financial interest.

How do I claim this?

You need to complete the form at the appendix to Chapter 9, Section 1, Annex A of JSP 752 (the link can be found below under  ‘Need more information’) and submit it to your Commanding Officer or his delegated representative. Speak to your Unit HR /Personnel Office if you require assistance.
