Specific learning differences
If you have been diagnosed with or suspect you may have a specific learning difference(s), then support may be available to assist you in training and the workplace environment.
Am I eligible?
Support may be available to Regular SP with a specific learning difference (SpLD), in particular Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and Dyscalculia. It may also be available to Reservists in the following situations:
During permanent Service on call-out
During home defence Service on call-out
When engaged in a full-time Service commitment.
When undertaking any duty or training. This includes any additional duties commitment undertaken.
When serving on the permanent staff of a reserve force.
What’s it for?
Personnel who have a SpLD can bring unique and valuable strengths to their work, which Defence wants to harness and embrace, by ensuring you are provided with support appropriate to your needs.
What do I get ?
Whilst you have the primary responsibility for managing your SpLD, support is available from your SpLD advisor/education centre/training establishment/chain of command. Support may be in the form of specialist advice, computer software, equipment and other adjustments, whether occupational or otherwise. Early emphasis is placed on coaching and the development of coping strategies for you to implement and manage.
If you have passed your Phase 2 training, there is the possibility of using Standard Learning Credits to supplement any provision in place to support your SpLD.
How do I take advantage of this?
If you suspect you may have a SpLD then speak to your SpLD advisor/education centre/ trainer/chain of command who will be able to assist you in getting an initial screening in order to determine the likeliness that you have an SpLD. If necessary, this can be followed up by a more formal assessment for Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and Dyscalculia, after which you may be provided with an Individual Learning Plan that provides support, coaching and coping strategies
If you already have an identified SpLD that impacts on your work or training or requires some form of Defence involvement, then when you join a new unit, station, or ship, you should inform your line manager, trainer, or commander at the first opportunity; bringing to their attention any previously agreed form of support or Individual Learning Plan, for action where appropriate.
