Am I eligible?

All RAF Regular and Reserve personnel are eligible.

What’s it for?

Functional Skills are the basic abilities in English and maths that equip you to deal with the problems and challenges of everyday life.

All Service personnel need to gain Level 1 Functional Skills qualifications in English and maths within three years of joining the Services. They then need to progress to Level 2 within eight years of joining. RAF personnel also need to have Level 2 qualifications before substantive promotion to Corporal.

What do I get?

You’ll get Level 1 and 2 qualifications in English and maths.

How do I claim?

If you don’t already have Level 1 and 2 Functional Skills qualifications in English and maths when you join, you’ll have an assessment to work out an individual learning plan.

Otherwise speak to staff at your Learning Centre.
