Expenses when away from duty station
If you need to work away from your normal duty station and pay for accommodation, meals or phone calls, you can use these allowances to claim back some or all of the costs.
- No eligibility information availableSubsistence AllowanceIf you are away from your duty station as part of your Service duties and need to pay for food or accommodation, you could use this allowance to cover, or contribute towards, the cost 
- No eligibility information availableMeals Out ExpensesIf your duties mean that you often have to purchase meals from commercial shops or restaurants instead of a Service messing facility, you could claim back some of the costs 
- No eligibility information availableReimbursement of Telephone and Postal FeesIf you incur fees for phone calls or postage that would normally be paid for by the Service, you could claim back the cost 
Expenses when assigned
Working in the Armed Forces often involves being assigned to a new location. When this happens, we’ll help cover the costs of moving home and, if you’re assigned to Northern Ireland, any extra costs of insuring your car.

- No eligibility information availableRefund of Legal ExpensesIf you are a homeowner who is permanently assigned to a new duty station and you decide to sell your home and buy another at your new duty station, you could get a contribution towards your legal expenses 
- No eligibility information availableNorthern Ireland Motor Insurance RefundsIf you’re on a permanent assignment in Northern Ireland and have to pay additional costs on your motor insurance as a result, you could be eligible for a refund 
Expenses when abroad
Working in the Armed Forces can take you overseas. If you’re abroad for a short period and need to buy foreign currency from a commercial source, we’ll cover the costs. If you’re there for longer and your family come to visit, we’ll help with their food and accommodation costs.

Miscellaneous
If you need to pay for medical and dental treatment or if your personal belongings get lost or damaged due to work, you can claim back the costs. We’ll also pay you for teaching part time, if it’s not part of your job, or if you take part in any experimental tests.
